The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a test for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but within Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
